The little black dress of salads

New year, new blog, new start; with the holidays' excess behind us I am looking to start off the year on the right foot.  Today’s lunch was a delicious salad.

Nowadays, I find people tend to snob the homely iceberg lettuce, preferring a plate of “sophisticated” mesclun. But I find a head of iceberg lettuce can be a show stopper with the right accessories.

A year ago this week, I was in Peru on vacation with my family and just before leaving for the airport I did a grocery run. Yup, that’s right, I went grocery shopping in Peru before returning home; told you I had a thing for food. One of my purchases was a bottle of Hellmann’s mayonnaise…it came with a complimentary salad dressing bottle with recipes on the side. I kept the dressing bottle and left the mayo. I have since tried their recipe for honey mustard vinaigrette and I am in love!

An awesome vinaigrette dressed over some delicately beautiful crispy leaves of iceberg lettuce is like a gorgeous pearl necklace elevating your little black dress into a va va va voom sensation. I thoroughly enjoyed my salad and I highly recommend you try the vinaigrette recipe below. You’ll never buy vinaigrette again.

Honey mustard vinaigrette

In a mason jar, mix the following

  • 20 grams of sugar (4-5 tsps)
  • 20ml of Hellmann’s light mayonnaise
  • 40 ml of orange juice ** I used Simply Orange
  • 40 grams of honey (2 tbsps) **you have to buy Orino Greek honey, it's divine
  • 120grams of yellow mustard (5-6tbsps) **if you prefer Dijon feel free to substitute

Enjoy!

PS: working on 2 fabulous salads for next week…stay tuned!
